Details (通告内容): Entrepreneurship takes more than just a great idea and enough funding to start with. Immigrants have proven, over and over again, to be the engines driving U.S. entrepreneurship. How to develop competitive advantage, grow market share, and retain talents in the U.S. business environment? In this event, we invited three successful first-generation Chinese entrepreneurs in Houston to share their stories and lessons learned about how they start their own business.

Biography of the Invited Speakers

Dr. Albert Ku, P.E., Managing Director, Energo (A KBR Company)

Dr. Ku was born and raised in Taipei, Taiwan.  He received his bachelor and master degree, both in Civil Engineering, from Cheng Kung University (Tainan, Taiwan) and Chiao Tung University (Hsinchu, Taiwan), respectively.  Before he came to the States for further graduate study, he spent two years at Taiwan University (Taipei, Taiwan) working as a research assistant in the field of Earthquake Engineering.  Later he received his PhD in Civil Engineering from Rice University in Houston, Texas.  After graduating from Rice he worked at McDermott Engineering, EQE (a structural consultant company) and American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) between 1997 and 2004.  In 2004 he founded Energo Engineering with 3 other partners with the focus on advanced structural analysis and structural integrity management.  Energo was acquired by Kellogg Brown & Root (KBR) in 2010, and Dr. Ku is currently the Managing Director of Energo.  Dr. Ku is the author or coauthor of 25 journal and conference papers.  He received 2nd prize in paper competition as a graduate student in the 1996 Southwest Mechanics Conference, as well as Best Paper Prize in 2013 during the Deep Offshore Technology Conference.  Dr. Ku is currently the chairman of API Task Group 19 which focuses on next generation of fixed offshore structural design.

 

Fan Chen, Co-Founder/Managing Partner, Nguyen & Chen, LLP

Fan Chen is co-founder and Managing Partner of Nguyen & Chen, LLP ("NC"), where he leads the Firm's Employment & Immigration Division and Corporate Division. In less than four years, the firm has grown from two attorneys and one part-time receptionist to ten (10) licensed attorneys and six (6) staff members.  Fan has represented many companies and individuals in a wide range of immigration, employment, and corporate legal matters. He has advised employers on hiring and firing decisions, wage and hour issues, employment policies and handbooks, restrictive covenants, general corporate matters, and mergers and acquisitions. Prior to his own firm, Fan worked in a boutique labor and employment Houston local firm for years. Fan received his J.D. from University of Houston Law Center. Fan is admitted to State Bar of Texas and can represent clients at U.S. District Court (Southern District of Texas).

 

Tim Hsu, Inventor & Founder, Ztylus Media

Tim, founder of Photography & Cinema Inc & Ztylus Inc., is specialized in photography/videography and CE product design. He was senior pipe line designer at Universal Ensco for more than 5 years. Because of his passion in CE innovation, he quit his job in 2010 and set himself a brand new challenge for himself. Today, Tim has more than 10 patents pending and granted in worldwide, most of his innovations are successful in market, and he recently received the invitation from ABC Shark Tank (Season 7), there Tim will meet sharks to expand his current business.

To his entrepreneurship, during 15 years in USA, he also worked as waiter, chef, photographer...in addition to his engineering design.
